Manchester United will be without goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for the Champions League visit of Roma.
The Dutchman suffered a toe injury in the 1-0 Premier League win against Birmingham and was immediately ruled out of Tuesday's Old Trafford tie.
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Edwin has a problem with his foot. Our medical team are taking care of the situation."
Van der Sar, who is set to undergo a series of precautionary scans, will be replaced by Poland's Tomasz Kuszczak.
Van der Sar has not conceded a goal in seven hours and 44 minutes since he was beaten by Geovanni's deflected effort off Nemanja Vidic in the derby against Manchester City.
But Kuszczak made a fine save from Gary McSheffrey's deflected shot after coming on at half-time against Birmingham and the club have every confidence in the 25-year-old.
"Tomasz made one very good save and showed why he is a Manchester United player," said Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz.
"It is very hard for him behind a player as good as Edwin and he has had to wait for his opportunity, but we are very confident in his ability and we have no worries."
That was the former West Brom keeper's 15th appearance for United, but this will be his first outing in the Champions League.
Tom Heaton, 21, who is yet to play for United, will cover Kuszczak on the bench.

Giggs confident of Man Utd deal
Ryan Giggs has revealed he is confident he will sign a new contract at Manchester United in the near future.
Giggs, 33, is in talks with chief executive David Gill to extend his Old Trafford career into a 17th year.
He said: "We have had a brief chat, so hopefully it will get sorted sooner rather than later.
"There have never really been any problems with my contracts. Maybe two or three years ago, but even then it wasn't a massive one."
Giggs, who has won nine league titles with United and is closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 754 club games, has a year left on his current deal.
He added: "We trust each other, which comes from 15 or 16 years in the first team. I don't think I need to play well in specific games otherwise I won't be offered a contract. Generally speaking, if I am doing well, everything else will take care of itself.
"It is not something I worry myself about. You could easily get caught up in 'I have only got a year left so I need to play well' and put that added extra pressure on yourself.
"But the pressure playing for United in itself is enough you don't want to put added pressure on.
"I just try to enjoy it because I feel the more I enjoy my game the better I play.
"That has been the case over the last few years because I am coming to the end of my career."
Chief executive Gill said the club would be looking to extend defender Wes Brown's contract, which is also set to expire next summer.
"Wes in his final year and we will sit down with him to discuss an extension," he added.
"We will be looking to extend his contract."
Man Utd against unlicensed Grant
Manchester United will oppose Avram Grant being granted dispensation to manage Chelsea without a Uefa pro licence, BBC Sport understands.
Grant does not have the required licence and has a 12-week period of grace to acquire the qualification.
If he does not Chelsea will have to appeal to the Premier League for special dispensation or replace Grant.
United would oppose any dispensation request, as they did with Glenn Roeder and Gareth Southgate.
Roeder received an extension on health grounds when he took over at Newcastle, while Southgate was deemed to have had restricted opportunities to gain a licence because of his international career after succeeding Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough.
Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill was also granted an exemption after undergoing a five-day refresher course.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is exempted from having a pro licence because he was already managing in the top flight when the rule was introduced, is understood to be a strong advocate of the qualifications.
Uefa and Premier League rules require anyone wishing to manage in the top flight to hold the Uefa pro licence, which requires 240 hours of study and usually takes a year to gain.
And a Premier League spokesman confirmed: "We have written to Chelsea to remind them of these requirements regarding these qualifications."
Southgate, now in his second season at Boro, said of Grant's situation: "Most of the older coaches were given special dispensation when the rules were first introduced.
"I'm sure Avram has nothing to worry about because he has the backing of his chairman Roman Abramovich."
Grant, who won league titles when coaching in Israel, has not held a club manager's position for five years although he was in charge of the Israeli national side during the qualifying campaigns for Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup finals.
He also holds coaching qualifications from Israel but Uefa is yet to rule on whether it is of an equivalent standing to the pro licence.
Everton 0-1 Man Utd
Nemanja Vidic's late header gave Manchester United victory in a tight encounter with Everton.
Everton and United were closely matched until Vidic arrived at the near post to power home Nani's corner after 82 minutes to seal a crucial win.
Paul Scholes had earlier wasted United's best opportunity, volleying over from 10 yards.
But he rescued United just after half-time when he scrambled Andrew Johnson's header off the line.
United again struggled to mount any serious attacking threat, but Vidic's goal gave them their third successive 1-0 win to put them, albeit temporarily, top of the Premier League.
Manchester United kept Wayne Rooney, fit after a broken foot, on the bench but Cristiano Ronaldo was able to return after suspension.
Everton were without former United keeper Tim Howard, who dislocated a finger playing for the United States against Brazil, handing summer signing from FC Cologne Stefan Wessels his debut.
But the German and opposite number Edwin van der Sar were barely troubled in a first 45 minutes in which chances were at a premium.
Carlos Tevez played three clever passes in the opening stages, but Everton held firm, with Joleon Lescott an imposing figure.
Everton left-back Leighton Baines was crudely hauled down by Michael Carrick after racing into the area, but even though the home fans screamed for a penalty, the offence was clearly outside the box.
Vidic wasted United's best chance on the half-hour when he turned wide at the near post after Everton's defence failed to deal with Ryan Giggs' corner.
United suffered a blow five minutes before half-time when Mikel Silvestre collapsed with no-one near him and he was stretchered off with what appeared to be a bad knee injury, to be replaced by Nani.
Scholes was walking a tight line after being booked by referee Alan Wiley for throwing the ball away, and he was fortunate not to be sent off for a late challenge on Mikel Arteta just before the interval.
Everton started the second period well, and Scholes was forced to hack Johnson's header off the line when he flicked on Arteta's corner.
Scholes wasted the best opportunity of the match after 53 minutes when he volleyed over from only 10 yards from Tevez's flick with Everton's defence nowhere.
Ronaldo was booked for diving as the atmosphere hotted up, tumbling under challenge from Leon Osman on the edge of the area.
Everton made a double change, sending on Victor Anichebe and Steven Pienaar for Osman and the tiring Yakubu.
But it was United who made the breakthrough with eight minutes left, Vidic powering home Nani's corner at the near post.
Everton sent on Scotland's midweek hero James McFadden in the closing minutes, and he instantly brought a fine save from Van der Sar, with Joseph Yobo unable to turn in the rebound.
Ronaldo pledges to keep his cool
Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo is determined to never be provoked again after serving a three-match ban for his red card at Portsmouth.
The 22-year-old winger was dismissed following an altercation with Pompey's Richard Hughes but told the Daily Mail: "I've learned a lot from this.
"Now I am mentally prepared to tolerate anything my rivals throw at me. They cannot provoke me anymore."
Ronaldo is in the starting line-up to face Everton on Saturday.
And the Portugal international added: "I live for football and during the last few weeks I've suffered more than at any time in the last few years.
"It has been an incredible feeling not to be able to help the team."
Rooney returns to Man Utd squad
Wayne Rooney returns to Manchester United's squad to face former club Everton at Goodison Park after recovering from a broken foot.
The 21-year-old England striker has been out since sustaining the injury in the opening day draw against Reading.
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Rooney has trained very well and will travel.
"But whether I start him, put him on the bench or leave him out until Wednesday night, that's something I have to decide."
He added: "He is desperate to play but we will take medical advice from the doctor."
Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension and starts, but Darren Fletcher hurt a knee playing for Scotland in France and is out.
And Ferguson is delighted that Ronaldo is back at his disposal again - but warned him not to rise to any provocation in a manner that earned him a ban after his red card at Portsmouth.
He said: "Ronaldo being back is a big plus. You miss players who make a difference, who can change the pattern of a game and create opportunities for you.
"What happened at Portsmouth was unusual because he normally has a good temperament to handle that kind of thing.
"But there is no question some players will maybe try to provoke a reaction from him now.
"It is up to Ronaldo to control himself and to know what a good player he is. He is only helping other team by reacting to it."
Ferguson revealed Fletcher could face up to six weeks on the sidelines after a challenge by Patrick Vieira in Scotland's Euro 2008 win in Paris on Wednesday.
He said: "It is a disappointment. It was a really bad, nasty challenge."
Blackpool swoop for striker Marsh
Blackpool boss Simon Grayson has completed the signing of former Manchester United striker Phil Marsh.
Marsh, 21, has been without a club since leaving Old Trafford in June, and he had already been on a six-week trial at the Seasiders.
The youngster failed to break into the Red Devils' first team and only made one appearance in the League Cup.
The Pools boss is set to add to his squad after the weekend once temporary loan transfers are allowed again.
