Sunderland manager Roy Keane is hoping to sign a number of new players before the transfer deadline on Friday.
The Black Cats have won only one of their first four Barclays Premier League matches and were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool on Saturday. Injuries are starting to pile up for Keane, who must do without Dean Whitehead, Carlos Edwards and Kieran Richardson for the Carling Cup clash with Luton Town on Tuesday.
"We need players to strengthen," he said on the club's official website. "We have a few injuries and our squad is already being tested. I have to ask myself whether the player coming in will be a major benefit, and if I have to let a player go to make the deal happen, that's something I have to live with."
been training
AS Roma defender Samuel Kuffour has been training with the club but Keane has now confirmed that he will not be signing the Ghanaian.
"We've had him over and had a look at him, but he's not one that we'll be taking any further," said Keane. "You're always looking to strengthen your squad and we'll be looking to bring two or three more in before the transfer deadline, but Sami Kuffour won't be one of them."
