Derby have distanced themselves from reports that they are lining up Paul Jewell to replace manager Billy Davies.
County came up to the Premier League via the play-offs but are bottom of the table without a win after five games and have been thumped 6-0 by Liverpool.
Chief executive Trevor Birch said: "The story is absolute nonsense and we want to nip it in the bud straight away.
"Chairman Peter Gadsby re-stated on a BBC Radio Derby show this week our absolute faith in Billy's ability."
Davies only agreed an extension to his present deal in July and the Scot's contract now runs until 2010.
But a newspaper report quoted a "source" inside the club, expressing concern at the Rams' chances of staying up and highlighted Jewell's record in keeping Bradford and Wigan in the top division against the odds.
Jewell said: "You can't stop people writing things but I have not been offered any job.
"I am not even actively seeking a new job at the moment, although of course I would consider something if it was offered to me."
Birch added: "We are aware there have been external forces around for some time now that have sought to destabilise this club.
"And we would urge our fans to take any stories they read quoting unnamed sources with a pinch of salt."
