Eriksson ponders Ireland dilemma

Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is unsure whether Stephen Ireland will face Aston Villa on Sunday after the midfielder's troubled week.

Ireland apologised on Friday after lying about why he withdrew from the Republic of Ireland squad.

The midfielder cited the death of a grandparent when in fact his girlfriend had suffered a miscarriage.

"I do not know if he is in the right mood," said Eriksson. "I cannot say until I speak to the player."

Eriksson added: "We, the coaching staff, have been talking about this a lot."

But the manager said that Ireland had made a mistake in not telling the truth about his situation.

"Whatever problems you have in life, you must stick close to the truth when you speak about them," added Eriksson.

"Do not come with lies - that is stupid. I am very disappointed with Stephen."

Ireland pulled out of Wednesday's match in the Czech Republic shortly after Saturday's draw with Slovakia.

"I realise now that it was a massive mistake on my part and I deeply regret it," stated Ireland.
