Carling Cup round-upDean Ashton scored a dramatic last-minute winner for West Ham United in their 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Just as the match looked destined for extra-time, Ashton hit home a spectacular volley deep into stoppage time to send the Hammers fans delirious.

Carling Cup holders Chelsea were comfortable winners against Championship outfit Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Youngster Scott Sinclair fired the Blues in front for his first goal for the club late in the first half. Salomon Kalou nodded in the second just after the break, before Steve Sidwell's long-range effort made it 3-0. Kalou got his second of the night and Chelsea's fourth late on.

Aston Villa bowed out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat to Championship club Leicester City. Matty Fryatt's great run and shot past Stuart Taylor sealed the shock triumph.

A brace from James McFadden and strike from Yakubu gave Everton a comfortable 3-0 victory at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Manchester United crashed out of the competition after a 2-0 defeat at home to Coventry City with Michael Mifsud netting twice.

Tottenham Hotspur made it to the last 16 of the cup with a 2-0 win at home to Middlesbrough thanks to goals from Gareth Bale and Tom Huddlestone.

Blackburn Rovers made light work of Barclays Premier League rivals Birmingham City. David Bentley, Matt Derbyshire (penalty) and Roque Santa Cruz were on target in the 3-0 home victory.

Birmingham keeper Richard Kingson was taken to hospital after he was hurt in a clash with Rovers player Chris Samba and the post.

Bolton Wanderers made it through to the next round after a 2-1 extra-time win at Fulham. Danny Guthrie put the Trotters ahead with a 25-yard goal, before Fulham substitute David Healy equalised. When the tie went to extra-time, Bolton substitute Stelios Giannakopoulus scored a priceless winner.
